product details

Visit Antwerp, the city's tourism office, asked for a digital-first concept to make Antwerp top of mind for travellers aged 18–36, and an alternative to the usual A-list cities. It had to feel authentic, connect online and offline, and give people a real reason to book.

process

  • We kicked off with a week of concepting in Rotterdam alongside CMD students, then continued back home as a team of four. I worked on concept, UX, wireframing and testing, plus a bit of design, then moved on to building the front and back end while the others continued designing.

During the process we also did multiple rounds of testing, interviews on the street with creatives in antwerp, etc. during these interviews we asked both about the app and if they would use it, general testing, but also asking about their hidden gems. Both through a selection of them and our own findings, we curated a total of 70 gems too to start the app so it would have enough content from the start.

  • I was also in charge of the physical activation: a small-scale prototype of the billboard. A monitor with a laser-cut box and a ViewMaster-style handle strapped behind it, with an ESP32 inside driving what's on screen.

The whole app was built with react router and a supabase backend. All gems can easily be changed through the database and as new gems get added through the submission flow inside the app, showing the new gem is as easy as switching a boolean inside of the databse.

result

Six Lenses lets visitors see Antwerp through the eyes of the Antwerp Six. The experience starts on the street: billboards in nearby cities where pulling the handle spins to one of the six designers, with a QR code into the app.

Each designer has their own map of hidden gems: one picked for them, the rest submitted by the city's creatives today. Text, visual and hot-cold hints lead visitors to each spot, where they collect a digital sticker and take a photo. At the end, they build a digital ViewMaster from what they found, saved as an image or a personalised motion video.
